Ration Card Shock: 2.25 Crore Names Deleted from Today, Check the New List Now

The government has initiated a major update to the Public Distribution System, removing the names of more than 2.25 crore beneficiaries from ration cards across several states. The updated beneficiary list has now been released, and ration cardholders are urged to check whether their names are still active in the system.

This action has been taken as part of an effort to eliminate duplicate, ineligible and fraudulent entries to ensure that subsidised food grains reach only genuine beneficiaries.

Why So Many Names Were Removed

According to officials, several irregularities were detected during recent investigations. Many people were found holding multiple ration cards, while others were receiving benefits despite no longer meeting eligibility criteria.

Some names belonged to individuals who had shifted to other states, moved to higher income categories or were no longer alive. To clean the database, states were directed to verify every household, leading to the removal of 2.25 crore names.

Who Is Still Eligible for Ration Benefits

Families falling under the National Food Security Act, including Antyodaya and Priority Household categories, will continue receiving subsidised food grains. Eligibility largely depends on income limits, economic status, household size and updated verification records. People whose documents and Aadhaar details are successfully verified will remain active beneficiaries.

How to Check if Your Name Is Still on the List

The updated ration card list has already been published by state authorities. Cardholders can check their ration card status using their registered mobile number or ration card number by visiting their respective state’s PDS portal or contacting their local ration shop. If a name has been removed incorrectly, households will be allowed to apply for restoration along with valid documents.

What to Do if Your Name Has Been Removed

Individuals whose names have been mistakenly removed can appeal for correction. They will need to submit Aadhaar details, address proof, income certificate and any other documents requested by the local authority. States have assured that genuine beneficiaries will not lose access to subsidised rations and will be reinstated after verification.

Government’s Reason Behind the Action

The government claims this cleanup was necessary to prevent leakage of food grains and ensure proper distribution under welfare schemes. Removing fake entries will help deliver additional benefits to the deserving poor and reduce the financial burden on food subsidy programmes.
